Murdoch Gillies

Kosb

6st Batt. King's Own Scottish Borderers.
He is remembered with honour on the Arras Memorial, the Scottish National War Memorial, the Helensburgh Post Office Memorial and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 2 Line 44.

The family home was at Iona Cottage, Helensburgh. The son of John Gillies, Waterstem, Glendale, Isle of Skye.
Murdoch Gillies was born near Inverness. He may have lived in Iona Cottage in Helensburgh for some time.
He married Jessie Neish who was reportedly living in North Berwick at the time of his death.
Murdoch died at Arras in May, 1917, originally posted as missing and later confirmed that he had been killed in action. The location of his grave is unknown.

Loan, Hugh

10/11th Batt. Highland Light Infantry. He is remembered with honour on the Scottish National War Memorial, St. Josephs Church Roll of Honour and the Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 3 Line 4.

The family home was at 86, East Princes Street, Helensburgh. The son of Hugh Loan (iron works labourer) and Maria Loan.
Siblings: One brother Francis Loan served with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. He survived the war. 

Hugh Loan

Hugh Loan was born at Colt Terrace, Coatbridge, where his father was an iron works labourer. It is believed moved to Helensburgh after the death of his father.
He was employed at Craigendoran Pier before enlisting.
Hugh joined the Highland Light Infantry at the outbreak of war and served as a stretcher bearer. He died of wounds in March 1917, having been wounded on three previous occasions. He was 24 years of age.

Bard Cottage

The family home was at Fountain Bank, 87, Sinclair Street, Helensburgh.
The son of Robert Reside and Jeanie Galloway Kerr.
Siblings: William had two brothers, Robert served in the Clyde R.G.A. and reported as seriously wounded but survived the war. Brother Daniel was too young to fight.

William Kerr

William Kerr was born at 67, East King Street in Helensburgh where his father was a joiner.
He was employed by Waldie and Co., coachmen and carters, before enlisting.
William was killed in action at Ypres. He had only just turned 21 years of age.

Kidston, William Hamilton Campbell

He is remembered with honour on the Scottish National War Memorial, West United Free Church Roll of Honour, Larchfield School Memorial, Helensburgh and Gareloch Unionist Association Roll of Honour and the Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 2 Line 52.

The family home was at Rosebank, 150, West Princes Street, Helensburgh. The son of William Hamilton Campbell Kidston and Celia Brownlie Kidston (nee Little)
The inscription on his headstone reads; 'Of soul sincere in action faithful and in honour clear'
Siblings: William had one brother, Malcolm and two sisters, Anne and Cecilia.

William Kidston

William Kidston was born at Easterton, Helensburgh where his father was chairman of A.G. Kidston, iron and steel merchant. He was educated at Miss Johnston's School, Larchfield School and the Leys School in Cambridge.
He entered his father's office in 1899, eventually became a partner and was working in the London Branch at the outbreak of war.
William was in his 38th year and unmarried when he died in the military hospital in Le Touguet from wounds received in battle.
