He is remembered with honour on the Loos Memorial and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 1 Line 41.

The family home was Alma Place, Helensburgh, where he lodged with the O'Brien family.
Siblings: His sister, Janet, was employed at Ardlui House.

Malcolm Smith was born in Tarbet, Argyll and little is known about his early life. His late mother had resided at Charlotte Street in the town. In 1911, he is living with the O'Brien family in Alma Place and working as a carter for Andrew Spy, coal merchants.

Malcolm enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in September 1914. He was killed in action at Loos at approximately the age of 26.

His remains were not recovered.
